Should Black Americans Celebrate July 4th or Only Juneteenth?

Should Black Americans Celebrate July 4th or Only Juneteenth?
Should Black people celebrate the 4th of July?

In this video, we discuss the complicated relationship Black Americans have with July 4th, Juneteenth, freedom, citizenship, history, and the American Dream. For many Black Americans, July 4th represents a contradiction because America declared independence in 1776 while our ancestors were still enslaved. Juneteenth represents delayed freedom and a more direct connection to Black American liberation.

But can both be true?

Can we honor Juneteenth and still celebrate July 4th? Can Black Americans acknowledge slavery, Jim Crow, injustice, and America’s troubled past while still claiming the country our ancestors helped build, fight for, labor in, and transform?

This conversation explores why Black Americans should not be shamed for celebrating July 4th, enjoying BBQ, fireworks, family, and freedom, while still honoring the ancestors and remembering the full history.

Black America is Juneteenth and July 4th. The struggle, the survival, the contradiction, and the celebration are all part of the Black American experience.
