What is the difference between an African American and a Psuedo Black Native American?
In this video, we examine the history, ancestry, identity, and legal distinctions behind these terms. African American generally refers to Black Americans whose ancestry is connected to Africa, particularly through the history of the transatlantic slave trade and generations of life in the United States. Black Native American may describe people who have both African and Indigenous American ancestry, belong to a federally or state-recognized Native nation, descend from Black Freedmen connected to certain tribes, or personally identify with Native American family history.
But ancestry, cultural identity, family tradition, tribal citizenship, and legal recognition are not always the same thing.
We discuss the relationships between Black communities and Native nations, the history of Black Seminoles and tribal Freedmen, intermarriage, oral family histories, DNA testing, and the growing debate over claims that Black Americans are the original Indigenous people of the Americas.
Can someone have Native ancestry without being a citizen of a Native nation? Does family history alone make someone Native American? Why are more Black Americans questioning the African American label and embracing Indigenous identities?
This conversation is not intended to erase African or Native history. It is an opportunity to examine identity claims carefully, respect documented tribal histories, and better understand the complex ancestry of Black America.
