There seems to be very little balance in the conversation around Black American identity and Africa.
On one side, you have people who resent any association with Africa—as if acknowledging African ancestry somehow diminishes the culture, history, and identity Black Americans developed in the United States.
On the other side, you have people who become so African-centered that they almost dismiss the significance of what our ancestors recreated in the Diaspora. Black American music, food, language, spirituality, traditions, institutions, and cultural expression did not simply appear out of nowhere. They were shaped by African foundations, transformed by the American experience, and developed into something distinct.
We shouldn’t have to erase Africa to affirm Black American identity. And we shouldn’t have to erase Black American culture in order to reconnect with Africa.
Africa is part of our ancestry. Black America is part of our lived cultural inheritance.
Balance, my people. Balance.
