In this conversation, I reflect on something that shaped the way I understand Black identity: growing up, I never really saw Black people as separate groups.
Whether someone was African, Caribbean, Black American, British, or from another part of the diaspora, I saw more of what connected us than what separated us.
Of course, every community has its own history, culture, experiences, and identity — and those differences matter. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more aware of the divisions that can exist across the Black diaspora and the conversations surrounding them.
In this video, we explore identity, culture, belonging, Africa, the diaspora, and what it means to see ourselves as part of something bigger.
