When four-time Grammy winner India.Arie posted a short video reflection recently about the current “song of the summer” — “everything has a frequency. Colors have a frequency. Names have a frequency. Cities and states have different frequencies. Music is pure frequency. When you put sound together with words and it’s rhythmic, you get inside people’s subconscious mind. And that is the power of a song. It has power over you, over us” — segments of Black media descended on her.
India.Arie’s crime, in the eyes of her critics, was to suggest that Christians and Christ-conscious Black listeners might want to think seriously about what they are allowing into their subconscious minds through the music they consume. Her critics called her judgmental. Backward. Preachy. Anti-Black. Elitist.
Pastor John Amanchukwu welcomes back Tinashe Peter — Zimbabwean-American conservative cultural commentator, 190,000+ subscribers on YouTube — to make the case that India.Arie is not just tolerable, not just defensible, but correct.
They open with the actual lyrics of Yung Miami’s “Spend That” — the current chart-topping single. John walks through what the song actually says. Scamming. Boosting. Stealing. Popping tags. Cash-flipping. The chorus. The chase after the fictional gangster billionaire. And the lie underneath it — that Yung Miami is presenting a lifestyle any young Black woman can access if she just does what the song describes, when in reality there are only fourteen Black billionaires in the entire United States and none of them are looking for the woman the song is celebrating.
Then Tinashe delivers what may be the sharpest theological read on India.Arie’s actual message available anywhere in Christian YouTube right now. Tinashe is qualified to make this read because — and this is one of the most powerful personal testimonies of the recent DTP run — he lived it. “I happen to dibble and dabble back in my formative years in New Age ideology, the woo-woo of it all. Everything was frequencies, energy, vibes. Then I came to know the true living God, and I realized — oh no. This is about good versus evil.”
